One of the nice things about using a computer to solve problems is that once you have an adequate solution to a particular kind of problem, you can package your solution, and never worry about it again. Changing the high-order bit results in the greatest possible magnitude change for a single-bit fluctuation. On an interrupt-based system, you may be able to force the termination of that program, perhaps by typing CONTROL-C, and recover without restarting from seratch. Or you can read and play at the same time. Every time you think you've gotten a handle on what makes a program "good," somebody comes up with an example that contradicts your theory.
