Form a Connection

When going to choose your rescue, keep an open mind and search for a real connection. Provide a Safe Space

When your rescue dog comes home, they are likely to be fairly stressed and overwhelmed. It is important to provide a safe space for them immediately upon bringing them home.

A crate is a great option, because it will allow you to keep your rescue dog safe and out of trouble when you are sleeping or at work. Start by selecting a crate that is appropriately sized for your dog, and setting it up in a quiet area of your home. Laundry rooms and spare bedrooms are great options, but you can truly put them anywhere in your house. In the crate, put a crate mat, some toys and even a few treats before you introduce your new dog.

When you bring your rescue dog home, make the experience with the crate positive! Sit on the floor, allow them to explore in and out of the crate at their own pace and offer treats and praise while they are in there. Make the crate accessible to them at all times so they become comfortable with it being their space &#; you’d be surprised how often dogs choose to lay in their crate voluntarily even when their humans are home!

Set up Veterinary Care

Rescue dogs have unknown medical histories, so setting up an established veterinary relationship is crucial when you first bring them home. Introduce Your Dog to Other Animals Slowly

Once you feel confident your new dog and other pets are comfortable you can allow them to meet one another. Always stay in control of the situation and be sure to step in if necessary!

Above all, a rescue dog needs patience. Allow them to explore your home at their pace. Allow them to open up to you when they are ready, and provide treats, reassurance and praise when they do. Seperti diketahui, Pasal ayat (1) huruf g Undang-Undang Nomor 7 Tahun tentang Pemilihan Umum (UU Pemilu) mensyaratkan bakal calon anggota DPR, DPRD provinsi, dan DPRD kabupaten/kota tidak pernah dipidana penjara berdasarkan putusan pengadilan yang berkekuatan hukum tetap karena melakukan tindak pidana yang diancam dengan pidana penjara 5 tahun atau lebih, kecuali secara terbuka dan jujur mengemukakan kepada publik bahwa ia mantan terpidana.

Akan tetapi, pasal tersebut tidak mensyaratkan masa tunggu bagi mantan napi yang ingin mengadu peruntungan meraih jabatan legislatif. Padahal, bagi mantan napi bermodal besar ditambah sedikit jejaring politik, bukan hal sulit mendapatkan kepercayaan partai politik yang acap kali hanya mementingkan aspek finansial belaka ketimbang rekam jejak integritas seseorang.

Praktik semacam ini memiliki daya destruksi yang lebih dahsyat terhadap demokrasi manakala calon tersebut adalah mantan napi korupsi dengan sumber dana melimpah yang membutuhkan proteksi politik dan bersenyawa dengan partai politik tunamoral yang memperdagangkan pencalonan (candidacy buying).

Sesungguhnya persyaratan secara terbuka dan jujur mengemukakan kepada publik bahwa ia mantan terpidana itu juga diberlakukan bagi calon gubernur-wakil gubernur, calon bupati-wakil bupati, dan calon wali kota-wakil wali kota seperti diatur dalam Pasal 7 ayat (2) huruf g Undang-Undang Nomor 10 Tahun tentang Pilkada.

Hanya saja, ketentuan ini telah ditafsirkan oleh MK melalui Putusan Nomor 56/PUU-XVII/ Menurut MK, ketentuan ini tidak mempunyai kekuatan hukum mengikat secara bersyarat jika tidak dimaknai telah melewati jangka waktu 5 tahun setelah mantan napi selesai menjalani pidana penjara berdasarkan putusan pengadilan yang berkekuatan hukum tetap.

Sungguh tidak adil sekiranya mantan napi yang berhasrat menjadi calon kepala daerah dibebani syarat tambahan berupa keharusan masa tunggu 5 tahun, sementara mantan napi yang berhasrat menjadi calon anggota legislatif bebas dari beban syarat tambahan ini. Padahal, baik kepala daerah maupun anggota legislatif merupakan rumpun jabatan yang pengisiannya melalui pemilihan (elected official).

Masa tunggu 5 tahun adalah waktu yang dipandang cukup oleh MK agar mantan napi melakukan introspeksi diri dan beradaptasi dengan masyarakat lingkungannya sebelum bertarung dalam kancah elektoral.
