Cuando la salud es una cuestión importante para una determínala persona, las obsesiones girarán en torno a ésta. Podrá obsesionarse por la propia salud o por la salud de sus seres queridos.

Sí hacer las cosas bien es muy importante y se tiene una personalidad perfeccionista,  pensar en cometer errores generaría ansiedad.

Si he pensado que puedo perder el control en términos catastrofistas,  creeré que haber pensado en eso puede hacer que suceda y lo que verdaderamente sucederá es que lo pasaré mal al tener una respuesta de ansiedad.

Este tipo de pensamientos suelen cuestionar  los valores de la persona,  por ese motivo cuando la persona ha tenido algún pensamiento que le causa rechazo, esto le genera malestar e intenta evitarlo consiguiendo el efecto contrario. La mayoría de las personas ante pensamientos de este tipo sentirán incomodidad, pero hasta ahí; algunas personas valorarán esos pensamientos en términos catastrofistas y esto hará que el pensamiento sea percibido en términos de amenaza y produzca una respuesta de ansiedad; La ansiedad es muy desagradable, pero no es peligrosa, es la reacción de nuestro sistema nerviosa respondiendo a señales de peligro para protegernos.

¿Cómo puedo superar las obsesiones?

Al inicio de este artículo he comentado que las obsesiones son similares a una fobia a los pensamientos y he puesto el ejemplo de fobia a los perros. ¿Qué haríamos para ayudar a una persona a superar el miedo a los perros?  Lo aconsejable sería hacerle permanecer un determinado tiempo cerca de un perro pequeño que esté lejos de la persona para progresivamente ir acercándolo. Posteriormente tendría que permanecer tiempo con un perro de mayor tamaño y así sucesivamente hasta poder tolerar a estos animales. Esta persona sentirá miedo y unas sensaciones desagradables que irán descendiendo de intensidad según se vaya habituando a permanecer en la situación. En el caso de las obsesiones el procedimiento sería similar.

1. Exposición a las obsesiones:

1. Identificar las obsesiones
2. Hacer un listado de ellas ordenándolas, primero la que menor malestar me genere y por último la que mayor malestar me cause.
3. Dedicar un tiempo cada día para hacer exposición a una o dos obsesiones, observar cómo al principio aumenta el malestar y cómo va disminuyendo según va pasando el tiempo. Cuando el malestar haya disminuido pasar a la siguiente obsesión del listado.

2. La hora de la obsesión

Se trataría de dedicar un tiempo cada día para obsesionarse. Si aparecen obsesiones durante el día posponerlas durante 5 minutos y cuando pase ese tiempo decidir si la pospones hasta que llegue la hora de la obsesión y centrar tu atención en otras actividades.

Cuando llegue la hora de la obsesión centrar tu atención en ellas sin distraerte y tratando de angustiarte todo lo posible, no intentes pensar en alternativas positivas.

Lo que sucederá es que te resultará prácticamente imposible obsesionarte, ¿y cómo puede pasar esto? Esto pasa por lo siguiente: cuando te obsesionas es en contra de tu voluntad y se genera una lucha interna para evitar pensar y sentirte mal. Cuando decides obsesionarte lo haces voluntariamente y dejas de luchar por lo que las obsesiones no logran mantenerse en tu mente.

3. Aceptación de sensaciones y pensamientos.

Se trataría de conectar con el malestar que generan las obsesiones, dejándolas estar,  observarlas como si estuviésemos en una obra de teatro viéndola  desde el escenario. Dejando que permanezcan en la mente sin intervenir, si aumenta el malestar dejamos que aumente, si disminuye dejamos que disminuya, si se mantiene lo dejamos estar, si no se presenta no forzamos. Si notamos malestar permanecemos en él sin evitarlo y observamos como pasado un rato disminuye su intensidad. En este ejercicio pasará algo similar a lo que he comentado en el ejercicio anterior, el malestar desaparecerá.

Querer mantener el control sobre las obsesiones provoca una lucha interna que  produce el efecto contrario al deseado, aumenta la ansiedad. Esto se puede comparar con lo que puede suceder cuando se nada contra corriente. Corremos el riesgo de ahogarnos. Si yo me caigo a un rio y pretendo acercarme a la orilla evitaré riesgos dejándome llevar por la corriente, si lucho contra ella el resultado en el mejor de los casos será agotador.

Este artículo es muy breve para explicar el problema de las obsesiones, he pretendido explicar de forma general cómo funcionan. Además he propuesto alguna técnica de las que se suelen utilizar en consulta. Lo más importante de todo, es que si sufres este problema y no te deja vivir busques ayuda profesional para darle solución.
